March 3rd officially marks “I want you to be happy day.” This holiday was created to encourage people to generate happiness for themselves as well as others. This day is a great oppourtunity to do good deeds for others. It comes at a perfect time! A poll named the “happiness index” released by the Harris Poll in 2016 shows that approximately 31% of Americans reported being happy. That is 1 in 3 Americans reporting that they are very happy. As a life coach, I think those numbers can be better!

Get your head out of the sand and face your problems head on! Denial can be tempting, but that nagging feeling that you aren’t taking care of business undermines your happiness. Change what you can, accept what you can’t and move on!
Be yourself! Don’t pretend to be someone or something you are not because you are afraid others won’t like you or accept you. The right people will be attracted to you and like you because of who you are.
Stop worrying and projecting into the future. Instead, find ways to live in the present. Just a few minutes of being mindful and present is energizing, restorative and supports feelings of peace and happiness.
Be more selective in who you spend time with and the activities you engage in. Your time is your most precious resource so don’t squander it with people who bring you down or doing activities that won’t matter 24 hours from now.
Make your happiness a priority. Do not consistently put the needs of others in front of your own. This is especially important for parents and those who are caregivers. You cannot give what you do not have and if you aren’t happy, you can’t make anyone else happy. When you take care of yourself and are happy, you are more positively motivated to care for others. Then it’s a win-win situation for everyone.
