Emotional eating is something that many of us may be facing during these stressful times.
Studies have shown that physical or emotional distress increases the intake of food high in fat, sugar, or both. Right now you may be turning to food for comfort, and you’re not alone. The good news is that we have the power to change.
If you, like many others, are struggling with emotional eating right now, try these tips to get yourself back on track.*
Determine the cause of your emotional eating
This is, ideally, the first step towards overcoming your emotional eating. If you don’t get to the root of the issue, it will be extremely difficult to overcome it. Take a step back and evaluate what’s going on in your life.
Over the past two months, our lives have changed drastically. We’re forced to stay at home all the while trying to maintain some level of normalcy. We are all adjusting to a new normal. It is normal to be experiencing heightened levels of stress and anxiety during these times.
Get up and get moving
Many studies conducted by researchers prove that exercise relieves stress and anxiety. Choose what works for you. It could be a walk around the block, an online yoga class, or any form of exercise that gets you moving for 30 minutes.
Not only does exercising help us to stay healthy, but it can also help us to overcome emotional eating by providing another outlet for our stress. In addition to performing yoga for exercise, meditation is a large part of yoga and can also lend itself to relieving stress and anxiety.
Maintain a routine
Apply this step to all areas of your life. Maintain a normal sleep schedule. Eat regular meals, rather than snacking all day. All of these things are equally important to keeping your stress at low levels.
